Director Shane O'Sullivan to talk about his film Children of the Revolution
"Just a quick reminder about the next Haringey Independent Cinema film, which will be on Thursday 1st March. Doors open at 7pm and we will be starting the whole event at 7.15pm. So, what's on offer.
The main feature is a film called Children of the Revolution which takes an unusual look at Armed Struggle, as it's looking at it through the eyes of the daughters to women who, for whatever reason, decided to take up arms in the late 1960's. Like the film "Weather Underground" which we showed a while back, this does not condemn or condone the actions of those who decided to use a more violent way to put forward their views. But, unlike Weather Underground, which talked to the revolutionaries themselves, this film looks at the effects such actions has on two daughters caught up in the daily struggles of living "underground".
The director, Shane O'Sullivan, will be coming along to speak about the film and to answer any questions - a coup for us at Haringey Independent Cinema.
This is our small part towards supporting International Women's Day a week later, and we will have somebody from Haringey Women's Forum coming along to talk about it and what is happening in Haringey.
Finally, at the beginning of the evening, we hope to be showing a short film made by Angelica Landry about the Welbourne Centre in Tottenham. The centre is threatened with closure by Haringey Council and this film is about the centre and it's fight to survive - which we can all support.
So, all in all a packed evening to come and enjoy.
Parts of Children of the Revolution is in subtitles but unfortunately not the whole film is, so we apologise to our audience who have hearing difficulties. The film about the Welbourne Centre doesn't have sub titles either. For those who need to use the services of dial-a-ride we estimate the films will end around 9.30pm and the whole evening about 9.50pm.

With 3 Music Stages, kids area, stalls galore , Youth Zone, Sports, great food and funfair this free entry event offers something for everyone.
Over the years, the event has attracted some of the UK’s biggest artists (including Lemar and Sway) and showcases many up and coming young UK talent.
One of the most popular areas , as confirmed by Time Out , is the Elders Zone featuring live music , the best of comedy talent and an atmosphere that inspires everyone to enjoy the fun and get into the spirit of Tottenham ‘s biggest party.
With a wide diversity of age groups and cultures, this free entry event has become a ‘not to be missed ‘date for the diary for the people of Tottenham and beyond.
From humble beginnings in 1997, the festival event enables local business initiatives, whether they are starting out or are well established concerns to avail of the great opportunity to market their services and products to a concentrated audience over several hours.
Over the years, both local and National companies have availed of one of the many marketing opportunities offered. Police and the Community Consultation - Send in Your Thoughts and Comments by 29th February 2012
"On behalf of the Haringey CPEG and the Police we wanted to take this opportunity of thanking you for the help and support that you have given the Borough since the death of Mark Duggan and the subsequent disorder that followed.
Haringey is a Borough that is keen to continue increasing trust and confidence in the police from all areas of the community and to improve communications.
You may now be aware that the proposed date for the IPCC to complete their investigation in April 2012 and the Inquest into Mark’s death is scheduled for 15th October to 7th December 2012.
There has been some speculation and reporting that one of the causes of the disorder in August 2011 was owing to a breakdown in community and police relationships.
With all of this in mind we write to you today to ask for your thoughts as to how we can develop and improve the working relationship between the community and the police.
We would ask you to specifically consider the following questions:
o How do you think that we could improve the way that the police work with the community?
o How do you think we could improve the way that the community work with the police?
o Are there groups in the community that the police need to engage with more or in a more productive way and if so how?
o What do you personally see as the way forward and how could you help to achieve that?
We feel that this is a real opportunity to canvass your views and knowledge in order that we can create a good working relationship between the community and the police dealing with those important issues affecting the community in Haringey. Clasford Stirling MBE, talks to David Lammy MP, at the official launch of Broadwater Farm Exhibition at Bruce Castle Museum

To mark the official launch of the Broadwater Farm exhibition at Bruce Castle Museum, curated by Odin Biddulph, local hero Clasford Stirling MBE, talked to David Lammy MP about his experiences of growing up in Tottenham, and how, after watching Broadwater Farm being built, he later moved there as a young man and became instrumental in turning the estate around into a place people could be proud of.
The historic talk ranged from what it was like growing up in Tottenham, when West Green Road was a no go area for young black people after 6 o'clock, to working through the unrest of 1985 and the more recent disturbances of August 2011.
We were incredibly lucky, not only to hear Mr Stirling's heroic story, but also to hear two of Tottenham's most well respected figures discussing one of the area's most well known, and often most misunderstood stories.
The High Commissioner of Jamaica, H.E. Anthony Johnson, attended the event and the audience was packed with prominent members of the local community - from Stafford Scott to Bill Guy - and local authority workers who have all played a major part in bringing about change on the estate, and throughout the whole of Haringey over the years.
The exhibition, first seen at the Broadwater Farm Community Centre last year, 25 years after the disturbances, is on at Bruce Castle Museum until March 2012.
Local artist, Everal Hall aka Eckee Chef, provided the delicious food and also displayed his iconic painting of Bernie Grant for the official launch, still on show.

"Dear ALL
NO, I am not predicting the next riots in Tottenham. I am promoting the play, written by Gillian Slovo, The Riots. That's right me promoting something! The guy who is never happy has finally found something that he LOVES!
Seriously, like I wasn't being serious before, THIS IS AMUST SEE PRODUCTION !!! It's the BEST thing that I have seen about the riots to date!
It was produced by the Tricycle Theatre who rarely bring their productions on the road. I begged them to bring it to Tottenham. Now I need your support to inform and encourage as wide an audience as possible to see it.
I don't want to give too much away, but the community's voices are truly represented in this play, trust me! I am in it, but I am not bigging it up because of that, if anything I am usually more critical when I am involved, as they never bloody get it right!
The play runs from 4th January 2012 through to 14th January, performances start at 8PM ( so no excuses really, is there?) There are a number of matinees too, so check out the flyer and the Bernie Grant Arts Centre website for complete details and online booking. BOOK EARLY AS IT COMPLETLY SOLD OUT LAST TIME.
